Mateo watched as Charity returned to her office. She walked quietly into the room without a greeting or a wave of the hand, then she closed the door behind her. Something was seriously bothering that girl. He hoped her family was aware of how troubled she was. The change in personality had begun during her last year of high school. Before that she had been a happy, outgoing girl. When she was a child she was often found singing to herself or dancing in the fields without a care in the world that anyone was watching. As she grew to become a teen, she began to be slightly more guarded, as most young girls do, but she was still sweet and loving. Mateo had always held a special place in his heart for the girl. And he could tell by looking at his son’s face every time she was near what he thought of her, although not a word of it had ever been mentioned. Mateo believed that he should not press the issue. He always tried to stay out of Gabe’s business unless he came to him for advice or help, which he rarely did. Gabe was the kind of man who harbored intense feelings, but he usually preferred to deal with them on his own. Mateo noticed he was happiest when he was with Charity, but lately something was off. He couldn’t understand why the two young folks had not even acknowledged each other’s existence since she had returned home. Perhaps tonight would be different. He smiled to himself in anticipation.
